Event: Peace Pole Pursuit
Location: All over the Greater Lansing area!  (see map/list of addresses)
Who: Anyone, any age, anyone interested in a fun challenge!
About: Walk, drive, or bike in pursuit of as many Greater Lansing peace poles as you are able.  Once you have found and photographed at least 10 peace poles with you in each photo and posted them on your Facebook page,  submit the form by clicking here. (For kids of age 10 and below, 5 poles is the minimum goal). For more details click here.

Event: Buff City Soap Celebrates Greater Lansing PeaceQuest 2023!

Who: Anyone and everyone interested in a fun, fragrant, colorful and peaceful activity!
About: For the month of September, Buff City Soap would like to offer anyone that mentions PeaceQuest a free laundry soap sample in our Peace & Love scent, named “PeaceQuest” for September!  Also, pick up a peace-themed coloring sheet that features both Buff City Soap & PeaceQuest images.  Color the sheet at home, return it to the store before the end of September, and you will get to paint, for FREE, a single-use, spherical effervescent blend of plant-based ingredients, handmade in store daily with olive oil, plus cocoa and shea butters for a moisturizing bath time experience.  The completed coloring pages will hang in our many large windows to be enjoyed by our guests and bring recognition to PeaceQuest and the UN International Day of Peace, September 21.

Event: Punishment or Justice? a quilt exhibit on prison reform
About: Lansing Area Quilt artists Christine Worland, Laura DeLind, Karin Miller,
Mary Brown, and Irene Armock-Schaff have their art displayed in the Grand
Rapids ART PRIZE 2023!
Location: First (Park) Congregational Church, 10 East Park Place NE, Grand Rapids
Who: Anyone interested in learning more about issues of prison reform including
history of prisons, damages caused by the present system including solitary
confinement and choices and alternatives. All of this is displayed in thread and
fabric in five quilts made by the Quilting Divas.
Time: Afternoons, 7 days a week

Event: “GL-UNA” Peace Gathering
Who: All ages – all who want to build peace in the world.
Location: Lake Lansing South Main Pavilion, 1621 Pike Street, Haslett MI 48840
Description: Join us for a GL-UNA Peace Gathering and ice cream social at the Lake Lansing Park South on August 27 from 1-5 pm. We’ll enjoy a summer picnic, yard games, and door prizes while we celebrate the work GL-UNA has accomplished to foster peace locally and beyond! GL-UNA will provide ice cream, beverages, and a concession stand will be open near the pavilion. Feel free to bring your own picnic foods. There will be lots of fun activities to enjoy, including face painting, creating buttons, painting peace rocks, and crafting peace signs for vigils and marches. We encourage you to bring your favorite outdoor games!

About:  Shiloh will guide us through a session of yoga that plants seeds of peace within.  Arrive early.  Bring a mat or a towel. Arrive at 4:15 pm to check in and get settled. Event: Premier performance of the play “I Will Never Be Okay”
Location: Studio Theatre in the Auditorium Building, Michigan State University
Times: 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
Host: MSU Department of Theatre
About: MSU Department of Theatre student Amana Dec used the power of playwriting to help them make sense of their experience and possible healing after the shootings on the MSU Campus. Their very personal response to the tragedy forms the basis of the new original play “I Will Never Be Okay.” There will be a student talkback with audiences following the performances.
Cost: Admission is free but donations will be accepted for the non-profit End Gun Violence Michigan (EGVM)
Parking: Free in the lot across the street from the Auditorium building. Enter through the entrance off Farm Lane and head downstairs past the Arena Theatre down the hall to the Studio Theatre.

DESCRIPTION:  Warrior Lawyers gives an overview of the historical, legal, judicial and social issues that shape Native American nations and shows how the nations use traditional culture and values to face challenges and promote sacred justice.  Filmed and produced in Michigan, this film is aimed at an audience of Native and non-Native viewers.  The values of sacred justice can benefit mainstream society, too.  The documentary promotes restorative justice as an alternative to the more punitive criminal justice system in the United States.

Event: UN Nuclear Weapons Elimination Day
About: Join the United Nations and people around the world in raising awareness about nuclear weapons, promoting the universal obligation to achieve a nuclear weapons free world and calling on policy makers (legislators and governments) to take concrete action to implement this obligation.
Actions: We encourage you to: 

  • Endorse Protect People and the Planet: Appeal for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World(If you have not already done so);
  • Endorse Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law (if you have not already done so);
  • Join the Don’t even THINK about starting a Nuclear War social media action;

Call on your government to promote common security and nuclear disarmament at the UN High Level Meeting on the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons September 26, 2023.

Event: “A Century of Michigan Voices for Justice and Peace – and New Directions” (celebrating the International Day of Peace, 2023)

About: This two-part program will include a very brief review of the last century of justice and peace activism in the Lansing area and Michigan by the Peace Education Center, Greater Lansing UN Association, MSU/the Michigan Legislature on South Africa, and Friends Committee on National Legislation. The program will feature: William A. “Bill” Root, 100 year old U.S. Navy veteran of WWII in the Pacific, former U.S. State Department diplomat, and local activist will speak on “seeking Justice and Peace in our Time.”

Event: Salaam Peace Festival: Come and enjoy Muslim culture and food!
Time:  2:30-6:30pm
Location: Islamic Center of East Lansing, 920 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing, MI 
About:  Several local restaurants and cafes will sell food. Cultural exhibits from around the world.  Crafts and souvenirs exhibit and sale.  Vendors will donate portions of profits to the Refugee Development Center. Activities will include calligraphy, henna, face painting, and balloon twisting. Guests are welcome to tour the Islamic Center and enjoy a ‘Discover Islam’ poster exhibit and presentation.
